Baseball falls to Wesleyan, 4-2 on day one of NESCAC Championship

NASHUA, N.H. -- The Bates baseball team brought the tying run to first base in the top half of the ninth, but were unable to break through as the Bobcats fell to Wesleyan University, 4-2 on day one of the NESCAC Championship Friday afternoon at Holman Stadium.

The Bobcats (16-19), who swept Trinity College last weekend to claim the NESCAC East Division's No. 2 seed, had opportunities to knock off the Cardinals (26-8), the NESCAC West Division's No. 1 seed, but left seven runners on base in the final three frames in the loss.

Bates will play the tournament's first elimination game on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. against NESCAC East No. 1 seed Tufts, the 5-2 loser of Friday night's contest between the Jumbos and NESCAC West No. 2 seed Amherst.

Junior righthander Connor Colombo (Mendon, Mass.) got the start for Bates, and after surrendering four runs, three earned, in the first three innings, put up zeros over the next four frames to keep the Bobcats within striking distance.

Wesleyan starter Nick Cooney limited Bates to only one baserunner, a second inning walk to Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.), the first time through the line up; but Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Tex.) notched a leadoff single to right in the fourth for the first Bobcat hit of the game.

Bates went down in order in the fifth and sixth, but took advantage of some wildness from Cardinal pitching to get on the board in the seventh. Reeinstierna, Mekae Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) and Evan Czopek (Portland, Ore.) drew consecutive walks from Cooney to load the bases with one out, forcing Wesleyan to make a pitching change. Reliever Sam Elias came in and hit Bates center fielder Ryan McCarthy (Plaistow, N.H.) with a 1-2 pitch to give Bates the first run of the game and leave the bases loaded with one out.

Elias then got Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) to fly out to shallow right field to keep the bases loaded. Bobcat left fielder Samuel Warren (Norfolk, Va.) came through with a clutch single to left that promised to score two runs, but Wesleyan left fielder Marco Baratta made a spectacular throw to second base that picked off McCarthy, who made the turn towards third. The out was recorded before the second runner scored on the hit, leaving the Bobcats trailing by two, 4-2 at the end of seven innings.

The Bobcats mounted another threat in the eighth against Elias, as Nate Pajka (Douglas, Mass.) launched a two-out double to center field to get things started. Reeinstierna was hit by a pitch and Hyde reached on an error to load the bases once again. Czopek ripped a hot shot down the right field line, but Wesleyan first baseman Sam Goodwin-Boyd made an outstanding diving stop to retire Czopek and end the inning.

The Cardinals had the potential for big innings early on, but both times Colombo was able to stifle the Wesleyan offense. In the bottom of the first, Wesleyan notched back-to-back singles to start the inning, putting runners on first and third with no one out, but Colombo got the next three batters to fly out to limit the damage to one run.

In the second, the Cardinals once again put runners on the corners with no one out, but Colombo got Ben Hoynes to ground in to the 6-4-3 double play, giving up a run and clearing the bases before getting Ellis Schaefer to ground out to end the inning. Wesleyan scored the final two runs in the third, courtesy of some timely hitting and lone Bates' error of the game.

Warren and Jackson each recorded multi-hit games for Bates, while Reenstierna reached base three times and scored one run, and Sam Maliska (Palo Alto, Calif.) threw a scoreless eighth inning for Bates. The Cardinals were led by Andrew Yin, Donnie Cimino, and Jonathan Dennett, who each had two hits. Dennett also had a pair of RBIs for the Cardinals. Wesleyan pitcher Cooney allowed two runs on one hit while striking out seven and walking five to win his eighth game of the year, and Elias notched save number four.
