LEWISTON, Maine - The Bates baseball team used strong pitching and timely hitting to sweep Trinity College Saturday afternoon, securing a spot in the NESCAC Tournament for the second consecutive season. The Bobcats walked off in game one, winning 3-2 in nine innings, and won game two, 3-0 in seven innings, completing the three-game series sweep of the Bantams (14-18, 4-8).
The Bobcats will take on Wesleyan University, the top seed out of the NESCAC West division, on Friday, May 8 at Holman Stadium in Nashua, N.H. and that game will be followed by NESCAC East top seed Tufts University taking on Amherst College. All three days of tournament play will take place in Nashua.
Bates (14-17, 6-5 NESCAC) received outstanding performances from a handful of seniors on senior day. Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) had three hits in game one and drove in the game winning RBI, a walk-off hit through the right side in the bottom of the ninth that scored Ryan McCarthy (Plaistown, N.H.). In game two, fellow senior Nate Pajka (Douglas, Mass.) hit a first-inning home run for the second day in a row, and Will Levangie (Frederick, Md.) threw a complete- game three-hit shutout to send the Bobcats into the postseason for the second straight year.
Levangie tossed a gem in game two, striking out nine batters and issuing no walks in seven innings. Bates pitchers did not issue a walk in either game and combined for 17 strikeouts.
In game one, Connor Speed (San Diego, Calif.) threw eight innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits while striking out seven. Mark Cunningham (Canton, Mass.) threw a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second win of the season.
The Bantams received solid pitching from starter Sean Meekins in game one, who tossed five and two thirds innings, allowing two runs while striking out six. Sam Jordan threw the final three frames for Trinity and took the loss. Nicholas Fusco threw game two and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out two.
Game 1: Bates 3, Trinity 2 (9 innings)
Sam Berry collected three hits, but it was his sharp single in the bottom of the ninth that gave the Bobcats the second win of the series and kept the playoff hopes alive. McCarthy drew a walk off of Trinity reliever Jordan and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.). Samuel Warren (Norfolk, Va.) was intentionally walked, and both runners moved over on a ground-out to second from Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Tex.), setting up Berry's walk-off single.
Trinity starter Sean Meekins held the Bobcats scoreless through the first five innings and the Bantams carried a two-run lead into the bottom of the sixth. Trinity scored the first run in the top of the third, when Scott Cullinane doubled to start the inning and eventually scored on a ground out by Matthew Toth. The Bantams added a second run in the sixth inning on an error from Bates.
In the bottom of the sixth, Warren laced a one-out single through the middle and Jackson followed with a single. After inducing a ground ball from Berry, Meekins issued a walk to Pajka to load the bases for Bates, and Mekae Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) drew another walk to give the Bobcats their first run of the game. Bates tied the game when a shot off the bat of pinch hitter Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) was mishandled by the Trinity third baseman.
The Bantams threatened to tie in the top of the seventh, as Cullinane and Nick Pezzella recorded back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position. But Speed responded by striking out pinch hitter Matt Mortimer and Evan Abraham to end the threat and keep the game tied.
Cullinane led the Bantams on offense, going 3-3 with a run scored and Connor Sullivan was 2-3. For Bates, Berry was 3-5 with an RBI while John Dinucci (West Hartford, Conn.) and Jackson also had a hit.
Game 2: Bates 3, Trinity 0 (7 innings)
Berry recorded his fourth hit of the day with two outs in the home half of the first inning and Pajka followed with a towering shot to left center field to give starter Levangie the early 2-0 lead. Trinity starter Fusco kept the Bobcats scoreless for the next three innings.
The Bobcats looked to add to that lead on the bottom of the fourth, as Pajka singled to start the frame and Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) added a one-out single to put two on with one out. McCarthy was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Trinity starter Fusco got Fox to fly out the center to keep the Bantams within two.
Bates added the third and final run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, as Warren walked to start the inning Eric Vilanova (Bridgeport, Conn.) came in to pinch run. Jackson singled up to middle, moving Vilanova to third, and Berry grounded into a double play that allowed Vilanova to score and give Bates the 3-0 advantage.
Tyler Forgione, Bryan Wolfe and Adam Moossmann each had a hit for Trinity, while Pajka led the way for Bates in game two with two hits and two RBIs.
With the win for Bates, Levangie improved to 2-2 on the season and becomes the second Bobcat pitcher to throw a complete game this season.
