WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The No. 20 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team fell 7-2 at No. 14 Williams on Sunday in a NESCAC match, the final of the regular season for both teams.
Both Bates (9-8, 4-4 NESCAC) and Williams (10-9, 4-4 NESCAC) will now await the announcement of the seeds for the NESCAC Championship tournament that will be hosted by Middlebury next Friday through Sunday. Tournament seeds are expected out early this week. The six-team NESCAC Tournament opens Friday May 1 at Middlebury College with the five seed playing the four seed and the sixth seed playing the third seed.
Bates' All-America doubles team of sophomore Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.) won 8-1 at first doubles over Williams' Jordan Sadowsky and Alex Schidlovsky. Bates lost 8-4 at second doubles and at third doubles, sophomores Patrick Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) and Brent Feldman (Waccabuc, N.Y.) were edged 8-6 by Sachi Raghavan and Brian Gordecki, allowing the Ephs to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Ordway grabbed Bates' lone point in singles, defeating Howard Weiss 6-3, 1-6 (10-5) at the sixth spot. Two other singles spots were decided by tiebreaking sets: Ellis at second singles and first-year Adam Schwartz (Los Angeles, Calif.) at third singles.
