Host Tufts sweeps doubleheader, wins series vs. baseball

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Bates baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Tufts University Saturday afternoon in NESCAC East action, falling 5-0 in game one and 19-4 in the second game at Huskins Field.

The wins give Tufts (23-7, 7-4 NESCAC) the series victory over Bates (12-14, 4-2 NESCAC) as both teams head into the final week of regular season action. With the victory, the Jumbos earned their seventh NESCAC East Division pennant. The Bobcats are still alive for the second East Division berth for the NESCACs.

Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.), who hit a pair of two-run home runs in the series opening victory for Bates (12-14, 4-4), added another two-run shot in game two, which accounted for half of the Bobcats offense on the day. Berry was 2-5 with three RBIs in game two, while Mekae Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) was 2-3. Berry has eight hits, nine RBIs and three home runs in the past six games, and is now batting .340 on the season.

John Dinucci (West Hartford, Conn.) also turned in a multi-hit performance in game two, going 2-4 with a run scored. Tufts was led in game two by Will Glazier, who was 3-6 with eight RBIs and finished a home run shy of the cycle.

Connor Speed (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss for Bates in game one, while seven different pitchers took the mound for Bates in game two. Andrew David threw seven innings to net the win in game two for the Jumbos, allowing ten hits while striking out 11. The Jumbos took advantage of 11 walks from Bates pitchers while pounding out 14 hits.

The Bobcats return to action on April 28 when they host Bowdoin for the final game in the three game NESCAC East series at 3:30 in Lewiston, Maine.

Game one Tufts 5, Bates 0

Tufts scored two runs in the first and three in the second while pitchers Tom Ryan and Zach Brown combined for the seven inning shutout in defeating Bates 5-0 in game one.

The Bobcats slapped out five hits, including doubles from Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) and Ryan McCarthy (Plaistow, N.H.), but left nine runners on base for the game. Bates starter Speed threw all six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out six.

The Jumbos put a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first, with a pair of hits and stolen bases from Connor McDavitt and Cody McCallum. Both runners scored on a single to center from Bryan Egan to give Tufts a 2-0 lead. Speed struck out Matt Moser and picked Egan off of second to end the inning.

Tufts added three runs on three hits in the second, with two of those runs scoring on a single up the middle from Nick Barker. With two runners on, McCallum was hit by a Connor Speed pitch to load the bases, and O'Hara was also hit by a pitch to bring home Barker and give Tufts the 5-0 lead.

After the hit batters, Speed induced an inning ending double play from Egan to end the inning, and the right-hander settled into a rhythm, allowing only one hit over the final five innings.

The Bobcats looked as though they might answer in the top of the second when Fox doubled down the right field line to start the inning and Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice. But Tufts pitcher Ryan retired the next three batters, notching a pair of strikeouts, to keep Bates off the board.

Bates put two runners on in the top of the seventh, starting with a McCarthy double and pinch hitter Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to put two on with nobody out. But Tufts pitcher Brown got the next two batters to fly out, and struck out Berry to end the game.

Tufts was led in game one by McDavitt, who had the lone mulit-hit game for the Jumbos, going 3-3. Bryan Egan was 1-3 with two RBIs.

Game two, Tufts 17, Bates 2 (6 innings)

Once again, Tufts got to Bates starting pitching early, tagging Bobcat pitchers Will Levangie (Frederick, Md.) and Sam Warren (Norfolk, Va.) for 11 runs, eight earned, in the first two innings of game two. Levangie took the loss for Bates.

The Jumbos scored six runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter to plate the early runs. Will Glazier had the big hit in the inning for Tufts, a bases-loaded double to center field that cleared the bases.

Glazier followed that at bat with the big hit in Tufts five-run second, as the catcher tripled to center to plate two runs, one of four hits for Tufts in the inning. Glazier finished a home run shy of the cycle in game two.

Tufts added four more runs in the fifth, but the Bobcats scored the first runs of the day off of Tufts starter Andrew David in the sixth inning. McCarthy reached on an error and Berry brought him one with a one out home run to make it 15-2.

Bates added tow runs in the seventh on five hits, all off of the starter David, who remained in the game. Fox, Dinucci and Asher MacDonald (Hillsborough, N.C.) all singled to load the bases for McCarthy, whose single to right field brought home Fox. David struck out pinch hitter Reed Mszar (Manassas, Va.), but Berry followed with a single to right that brought home the fourth run of the game for Bates. But David rallied to strike out Jake Shapiro (Sandy, Utah) and got Canavan to foul out to end the inning.

Hyde finished 2-3 with a pair of doubles and Dinucci was 2-4 with a run scored.

David threw seven innings for Tufts, allowing four runs on ten hits while striking out 11. Speros Varinos and Rory Ziomek each threw an inning for the Jumbos. For Bates, middle reliever Mark Cunnihnham had the longest outing of the day, throwing two and a third shut-out innings.
