AMHERST, Mass. -- Bates first-year student Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) scored a rousing three-set victory over Andrew Scheiner at No. 5 singles, but it was the No. 20 nationally ranked Bobcats' only point in an 8-1 defeat at No. 4 Amherst on Friday.
With the win, Amherst improves to 18-4 overall (7-0 NESCAC) and has now won nine consecutive matches. Bates moves to 9-7 on the season, 4-3 in league play.
The Bobcats finish the regular season on Sunday at Williams (1pm), possibly with a berth in the six-team NESCAC Championship tournament at stake.
Amherst swept the three doubles matches, with the most competitive match at the No. 1 spot, where Aaron Revzin and Michael Solimano defeated Bates' All-America duo, senior Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.), by an 8-3 score.
Planche moved on to a three-set loss at No. 1 singles to Andrew Yaraghi, but the Jeffs won handily at second, third, fourth and sixth singles.
