BANGOR, Maine - The Bates bullpen combined to throw six innings of two hit baseball but the Bobcats were unable to overcome a five run second inning by Husson University, falling to the Eagles 6-3 at Winkin complex Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Eagles (22-13) tagged starter Connor Russell (Cumberland, Maine) for five runs in the second inning, before Sam Warren (Norfolk, Va.) came in and held Husson to one run on two hits over the next 4.2 innings, while striking out five. Rob DiFranco (Melrose, Mass.) tossed the final two frames for the Bobcats (9-12), allowing only one hit and striking out four.Â
Bates struggled early against Husson starter Dennis O'Neil, managing only one hit through the first four innings, but got to reliever Ben Holmes for three runs in the top of the sixth. Evan Czopek (Portland, Ore.) led off with a pinch hit single and Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) followed with a shot up the middle to put two on with nobody out. The next two batters struck out, but Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) came through with a little two out lighting, doubling to left center to score both runners and make it 6-2. Reenstierna now leads the Bobcats with 16 RBIs on the season.Â
Bates scored their third run courtesy of some head's up baserunning. John Dinucci (West Hartford, Conn.) singled through the right side to move Reenstierna to third, and when Dinucci got himself in a run down on the attempted steal, Reenstierna scampered home to cut the lead in half at 6-3.
Bates threatened in the top of the ninth, with Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.)Â and Reenstierna slapping back to back singles to start the inning. But Husson closer Corey Mongiat got Dinucci to line into a double play and struck out John Anagnost (Boulder, Colo.) to save his third game of the season. Â Â
Hudson scored all five runs on five hits in the third, highlighted by an Andrew Curran single down the right field line that hit the first base bag and brought home two runs to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead. Warren then came in and go Kyle Bishop to fly out and retired J.T. Written on a superb diving catch from Bobcat center fielder Ryan McCarthy (Plaistow, N.H.) to end the inning. Â
Berry and Reenstierna combined for four of the nine Bates hits on the night, as Berry was 2-3 with a run scored while Reenstierna was 2-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Tex.) had one of the two extra base hits with a double, and Reenstierna had the other.Â
Hudson received multi-hit performances from Christian Corneil and Seth Freudenberger, while Andrew Curran had one hit and a pair of RBIs for the Eagles. Zak Kochis picked up the win for the Eagles, tossing a scoreless fifth to notch his first victory of the season.
The Bobcats return to action on April 22 with a double header at Gordon College beginning at 2:00 p.m.Â
