BRUNSWICK, Maine - Patrick Ordway scored victories in doubles and singles play, but the No. 20 Bates men's tennis team fell to No. 6 Middlebury College, 7-2 in NESCAC action on Sunday afternoon at Wallach Tennis Center on the campus of Bates College. It was the eighth consecutive victory for Middlebury.
Six of the last seven matches for Bates (9-5, 4-1 NESCAC) have been against ranked opponents with Middlebury (16-2, 6-0 NESCAC) coming in as the highest rank opponent the Bobcats have played since taking on No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in February.
The duo of Henry Lee (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) and Patrick Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) won in number two doubles, defeating Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell in a tiebreaker, ultimately winning 9-8 (7-5). In the number one spot, Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.) and Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) very nearly notched the win, pushing the team of Peter Heinrich and Palmer Campbell to a tie-breaker before falling 9-8 (7-5).
The Panthers won the first five matches of singles competition in straight sets before Ordway scored another point for Bates by defeating Courtney Mountfield 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Bates returns to action on April 22 when they travel to Tufts for a 4:00 p.m. NESCAC match.
