LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 16 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team defeated No. 35 Colby 6-3 Tuesday night in New England Small College Athletic Conference Action at Merrill Gymnasium, avenging the Mules' 6-3 win of a year ago.
The Bobcats (5-1) took two of three in doubles competition, and then won at second through sixth singles to secure the victory.
Colby picked up the No. 1 win in doubles, but the Bobcats nailed wins in number two and three doubles spots, with sophomore Patrick Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) and senior Henry Lee (Sag Harbor, N.Y.), winning 8-4 in the second spot and first-years Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) helping to stake Bates to the 2-1 lead after doubles competition, defeating Shaw Speer and Cameron Hiller 8-3.
In singles competition, sophomore Christopher Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) picked up the first win for Bates at No. 2, with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory over Vlad Murad. The Bobcats followed with consecutive victories in the number two, four, and six spots for the win.
Sophomore Brent Feldman (Waccabuc, N.Y.), Rosen and Ordway each recorded singles victories as Feldman won in consecutive sets, 6-2, 6-2, and Rosen won 6-0, 6-2, with Ordway picking up the 6-4, 6-2 win.
Bates will next face North Carolina Wesleyan on March 19, in Fredericksburg, Va., for a 6:00 p.m. showdown.
