CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Senior Pierre Planche defeated Warren Wood at the No. 1 position Saturday, but the Bates men's tennis team fell to No. 2 nationally ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7-2 in the final match of its trip to Southern California.

Planche (Natick, Mass.) dropped the first set 6-3, before rallying for a 7-6 victory in the second set to tie things up. He followed with the 6-3 win to stake the Bobcats to a 1-0 lead. Bates very nearly picked up a second point in the number four singles, as first-year Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) battled back from a 6-2 first set loss, but fell in the second set 7-6.

The Bobcats battled tough in all doubles; Rosen and first-year Adam Schwartz (Los Angeles, Calif.) defeated Nikolas Marino and Byran Mehal 9-7 in number three doubles, while senior Henry Lee (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) and sophomore Patrick Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) pushed the team of Skyler Butts and Daniel Morkovine to the brink in number two doubles, before falling 9-8.

Bates resumes play on Friday March 6 with a 5:00 pm match at Babson College.
