CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Bates baseball team has generated 30 runs on 38 hits through the first three games of winter break, but the Bobcats came up short Wednesday afternoon, falling to Pomona-Pitzer College 9-6. The team is hitting .325 through the first three games, with a .530 slugging percentage and 28 RBI's.
Junior
Samuel Warren (Norfolk, Va.) highlighted the 11-hit attack for Bates, going 4-5 with three doubles and a pair of RBI's. The 6'3 righty also pitched the first two innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out three.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Bobcats answered in the top of the third frame with three runs. After two quick outs,
Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) got things started with a single down the left field line.
Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas) chased home Reenstierna with a double to left field, and Warren followed with a double to score his teammate. After
Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) was hit by a pitch,
Nate Pajka (Douglas, Mass.) continued his hot hitting, singling up the middle to give his team a two-run advantage.
The Bobcats carried the 3-1 score into the bottom of the sixth inning, when Pomona-Pitzer erupted for six runs on six hits to take the lead for good. Pomona-Pitzer's Simon Rosenbaum highlighted the inning with a two-run home run, and his team tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to stretch the lead to six.
Bates rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth, including doubles and RBI's from Warren and
Ryan McCarthy (Plaistow, N.H.), and singles from
Evan Czopek (Portland, Ore.) and Reenstierna. Aside from Warren, Pajka and Reenstierna both registered multi-hit games for head coach Mike Leonard's team, while Jackson collected a pair of RBI's on one hit and a sacrifice fly.
