Men's basketball downs Husson 86-67

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Mike Boornazian scored 26 points while juniors Malcolm and Marcus Delpeche both contributed double-doubles as the Bates men's basketball team defeated Husson University 86-67 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night in Alumni Gymnasium.

Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) tied his season high, making 10 of 12 free throws and leading the Bobcats (3-2) with four assists. Malcolm Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) dunked four times en route to 13 points with 12 rebounds and three blocks, while Marcus Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) pitched in 12 points, 10 boards and two blocks. Sophomore Jerome Darling (Hartford, Conn.) scored 11 points with three assists off the bench.

Raheem Anderson led the Eagles (3-2) with 25 points and Trevon Butler added 16. Eli Itkin had team highs of eight rebounds and four assists, and Justin Martin scored eight points off the bench.

The Bobcats led wire-to-wire after opening up an 8-0 lead to start the game, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by senior Josh Britten (Yarmouth, Maine) and a Boornazian jumper. Boornazian scored nine additional points as Bates opened up a 25-9 lead, capped by Boornazian's three with 8:51 to go in the first half. Husson closed within six points in the final minute of the half and trailed 41-33 at intermission.

Bates shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second half, including six dunks, and held Husson to 34.3% shooting to hold the Eagles at bay. After Husson's Darryl Wood scored underneath to make it 48-40, the Eagles could get no closer the rest of the way. Three minutes after Marcus Delpeche fed his twin brother cutting down the lane for a monster dunk, Malcolm returned the favor on a nearly identical play with 14:16 to go in regulation, and Bates' lead expanded to 62-48 with a Boornazian three midway through the half.

Bates continued to distance itself from Husson to lead by as many as 21 in the final minute.

Bates outrebounded Husson 50-38, including 23 offensive boards.

Husson is ranked fourth in Maine and Bates is ranked fifth in this week's Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Top 5 poll.

Bates will host St. Joseph's College of Maine in a non-conference game on Thursday at 7:30pm; Husson hosts Colby-Sawyer in a North Atlantic Conference game Friday at 7:30.
