Southern Vermont edges men's basketball 67-63

LEWISTON, Maine -- Nate Goldsmith scored 17 points off the bench, including seven in the final two minutes, to lead Southern Vermont College to a 67-63 non-conference victory over the Bates College men's basketball team on Monday night in Alumni Gymnasium.

Goldsmith scored 13 of his points and grabbed seven of his team-high eight rebounds in the second period. Daemond Carter scored nine of his 12 points in the second half, and Josh Borders added 10 points for Southern Vermont.

The Mountaineers (8-2), who finished 25-4 last season but were not chosen to play in the NCAA Tournament, won their seventh straight game. Their win avenges a 72-67 home loss to Bates last season on Jan. 3, 2015.

Bates (4-4) shot season lows of 30.4 percent (21-69) from the field and 11.1% (2-18) from behind the arc in suffering its second straight loss.

Bates junior Marcus Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) scored a game- and career-high 21 points for the Bobcats, to go with nine rebounds. Senior Mike Newton (Chapel Hill, N.C.) scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench, while junior Malcolm Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) and senior Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) added 12 and 11 points apiece.

In a game featuring 48 fouls and 44 turnovers, neither team led by more than six points throughout. There were 15 ties and 17 lead changes. Bates had four players collect four fouls apiece.

Malcolm Delpeche made four free throws in a row to give Bates a 61-58 lead with 2:53 to go in the game. Goldsmith drained his second 3-pointer of the game with 2:42 left to tie the game, and after a defensive stop, the junior swingman converted a three-point play with two minutes to go, with a layup and a foul by Marcus Delpeche, to give the Mountaineers the lead for good at 64-61.

Marcus Delpeche made a pair of free throws to close the gap to 64-63, but Southern Vermont's Casey Hall bumped the lead back to three, driving baseline for a layup and a foul. Hall missed the free throw, but Bates failed to score on its final three possessions, sealing the win for Southern Vermont.

Southern Vermont took a 30-29 lead into halftime, but Bates began the second half with an 11-4 run in the first three minutes, featuring four points by Boornazian and a 3-pointer by senior Josh Britten (Yarmouth, Maine). Carter cut the deficit in half with a three with 16:47 to go in regulation, and Borders followed with another to tie the game at 40. Carter then answered a jumper by Boornazian with another three and a layup for a 45-42 Mountaineer lead with 15:10 to go.

With eight points and nine rebounds, Newton buoyed Bates in a sloppy first half that featured 15 turnovers for both sides. The senior forward recorded his second consecutive and second career double-double in 19 minutes of action.

The Bobcats will host fellow 2015 NCAA Tournament team WPI on Dec. 29 at 5:30pm.
