Men's basketball comes back to tip Southern Vermont, 72-67

BENNINGTON, Vt. -- The Bates men's basketball team outscored host Southern Vermont College 39-27 in the second half to post a 72-67 victory on Saturday at Mountaineer Gymnasium.

Bates rose to 8-2 after dropping its previous two games in Atlanta to No. 7 Emory and Birmingham-Southern. Southern Vermont, which has a road win over Williams to its credit, dropped to 7-3.

Sophomore Marcus Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) collected 15 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and three steals for the Bobcats, who outrebounded the Mountaineers 42-28. Senior Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine) had 14 points and six assists while senior Billy Selmon (Atlanta, Ga.) also scored 14 and junior Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) netted 11.

Safford has now scored 996 points in his Bates career. He will look to become the 31st player in team history to score 1,000 on Tuesday, when the Bobcats host Brandeis.

Deshawn Hamlet led the Mountaineers with 18 points; William Bromirski added 14 and Casey Hall netted 10 points. Antoine White contributed nine points and six assists.

Brandon Casella's 3-pointer with 2:11 left in the first half helped the Mountaineers on a 6-2 run and they took a 40-33 lead into halftime. SVC started the second half with buckets by Dolapo Olugbile and Casey Hall to extend the lead to 44-33. A three by Bromirski, a follow-up dunk by Hall and a pair of free throws by Olugbile kept the lead in double digits at 51-41 with 15:41 left in the game. Following a layup by Hamlet, Bates cut it to six on consecutive layups by Safford and Marcus Delpeche, prompting a timeout for the hosts.

A layup by Boornazian and a three by Selmon sandwiched a jumper by Hamlet to narrow the lead to three at 56-53 with 8:17 to go. Boornazian followed another jumper by Hamlet with a three to make it 60-58. Hamlet made a pair of free throws to score his 10th straight point for the Mountaineers, before Selmon narrowed the gap to one with a jumper and a foul shot. Safford gave Bates its first lead since 6-5 when he drained a Boornazian-assisted three with 3:09 to go.

Hall countered with a layup set up by Davante Jordan to regain the lead for SVC at 65-64, with 2:51 left. After Hall blocked a Boornazian shot in the paint, sophomore Malcolm Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) controlled the offensive rebound and Bates called timeout with 1:15 left to play. Out of the timeout, Safford found Selmon for a three with 1:03 left for a 67-65 Bates lead. At the other end, Hamlet attempted a layup that was swatted away by Marcus Delpeche. Safford controlled the ball, was fouled with 27 seconds left and made both free throws for a 69-65 lead.

Boornazian made both of his free throws with 17 seconds remaining, after White had scored on a layup for SVC. Marcus Delpeche came up with a steal with 10 seconds left and was fouled. He made one of two free throws for the final margin of 72-67.
