LEWISTON, Maine – Senior Timmy Berg, junior Pierre Planche, and first-year Christopher Ellis helped account for five points as No. 25 Bates College men's tennis beat Babson College, 7-2, in its home opener on Friday night in Merrill Gym.
The Bobcats (1-3) captured a 2-1 lead after doubles play and won five of the six singles matches to top the visiting Beavers (1-4).
Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) and Planche (Natick, Mass.) teamed at the top doubles spot to win 8-5 while senior Eric Ruta (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) paired to pick up an 8-4 victory at the No. 3 spot.
At the top of the singles lineup, Berg snagged a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1, Planche emerged victorious 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot, and Ellis won 6-4, 7-5 in the third position.
Junior Henry Lee (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) gained a 6-0, 6-0 victory on singles court No. 5, and first-year Patrick Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win at sixth singles.
Next, Bates hosts Hamilton on Sunday at 3 p.m.
