LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 24 nationally ranked Bates College men's tennis team notched an impressive 9-0 win over NESCAC and in-state rival Colby on Thursday at the Wallach Tennis Center. The Bobcats evened their conference record at 4-4 and raised their overall record to 9-4, while Colby fell to 4-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Bates started out by sweeping doubles play. The All-American tandem of Ben Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) and junior Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) convincingly defeated the dangerous Mules pair of Bryan Brown and Alex Chin, who were 8-1 this season with five straight wins to their credit. Juniors Max Berger (Concord, N.H.) and Ryan Mannelly (New Canaan, Conn.) coasted past Nick Rosen-Wachs and Robert Yee at No. 2 doubles 8-0, and junior Zach Fenno (Armonk, N.Y.) and first-year Jeff Beaton (Haverhill, Mass.) fought back from being down a break to defeat Tommy Kimball and Phillip Zunshine at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

The Bobcats swept singles play, as Stein defeated Chin 4-1 at No. 1 singles after Chin retired. At No. 6, Beaton defeated Peter Serafini 8-1, as the match had been decided before they began playing.

Bates wraps up the regular season with home NESCAC matches against Trinity on Saturday and Wesleyan on Sunday, both with 2 p.m. starts.
