MEDFORD, Mass. -- The No. 22 ranked Bates College men's tennis team took care of No. 30 Tufts University in convincing fashion on Friday, winning 9-0 in a NESCAC matchup. It was the third straight shutout win for the Bobcats (6-1, 1-1 NESCAC).
After the Bobcats swept the doubles matches, senior Ben Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) was the first to claim victory in singles, defeating Jon Trott 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Bates clinched the win when junior Zach Fenno (Armonk, N.Y.) defeated a high school rival, Kai Victoria, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Junior captain Ryan Mannelly (New Canaan, Conn.) handed the Jumbos' (5-2, 0-1 NESCAC) Garrett Schuman his first loss in 11 matches at No. 5 singles, and junior Michael Reiss (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) used his excellent retrieving skills to prevail in a first-set super tiebreaker over Tony Carucci, 7-6(5), 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Bates will next play at Amherst on April 4 at 1 p.m.
