MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates field hockey team became the first squad to score more than one goal on Tufts this season, but fell 4-2 to the nationally 10th-ranked team in a NESCAC game at Tufts' Bello Field Saturday.

Amanda Russo scored the first of her two goals on the day 10 minutes into the game for a 1-0 Jumbos lead. The Bobcats tied it up at 7:30 of the first half with a goal by sophomore Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I.), her team-high fourth goal of the season. She was assisted by senior Abby Childs (Philadelphia, Pa.). Although Tufts (6-0, 4-0 in NESCAC) provided much offensive pressure in the first half, Bates refused to allow any further scoring, and for the first time this season, Tufts did not lead at the half.

Russo's second goal of the game at three minutes into the second half put Tufts up for good. Tamara Brown then gave the Jumbos a 3-1 advantage with 21 minutes remaining in the second half. Michelle Kelly scored the hosts' final goal at the nine-minute mark.

Bates (2-5, 0-4 NESCAC) became the first squad this season to score more than one goal against Tufts when sophomore Stephanie Cabot (Dover, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal with two minutes left in the game.

Jumbos goalkeepers Katie Hyder and Marianna Zak combined for 3 saves. Bates sophomore keeper Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) finished with 16 saves, including 10 in the second half.

Bates will be in action at home Wednesday at 5 p.m. against in-state rival Husson College.
