LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College field hockey team emerged from a 1-1 tie at halftime to dominate the visiting New England College Pilgrims in the second half on Wednesday evening at Campus Avenue Field, registering a 5-1 non-conference victory.

Bates (2-4) outshot NEC (6-3) by a 22-1 margin in the second half, 34-9 for the entire game.

Bates senior Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.) and sophomore Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) each scored twice for Bates, with Greenwood adding in an assist. Senior Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) added a goal and an assist as Bates scored five goals for the first time in over a year (since defeating Amherst 5-4 on Sept. 15, 2007).

Greenwood got the Bobcats on the board in the 13th minute on an assist by Sampson, but New England College senior Jodie Dresser (Keene, N.H.) tied the game at 1-1 in the 14th minute, assisted by junior Khatianna Evans (Wayne, Maine) on a penalty corner.

The teams stayed knotted until six minutes into the second half, when Sampson blasted Greenwood's insert pass on a penalty corner to score the eventual game-winner.

Kazarian got into the act in the 63rd minute when she gathered a Pilgrim turnover and scored off the back of her stick past NEC junior goalie Mary Roux (Auburn, Mass.). Greenwood gave Bates an insurance goal less than a minute later on a penalty corner, when she knocked in the rebound of a Roux save. Kazarian notched her team-high third goal with 1:19 left in the game, scoring unassisted off another rebounded save.

Roux made 12 saves for the Pilgrims, while Bates sophomore keeper Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) stopped three Pilgrim shots.

Bates next plays at Tufts University in a NESCAC contest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
