MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Bowdoin College advanced to the semifinals of the NESCAC Championships with a 5-0 win over in-state foe Bates College Friday at Middlebury. The Polar Bears will take on top-seeded Trinity Saturday at Middlebury with a 1:30 p.m. start time.
After sweepings the doubles matches, Bowdoin, ranked No. 17 in Division III, needed to win just a pair of singles contests to clinch the victory over the No. 23 Bobcats.
Garrett Gates was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at #1 over junior Ben Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) of Bates, while Stephen Sullivan wrapped up the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at #2 over sophomore Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka).
Bates' record is lowered to 12-5 overall, 12-4 against NCAA competition. The Bobcats will now await word on whether they receive a bid to the NCAA New England Regional Championships.
