LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College and Wesleyan University field hockey teams played to a 4-4 stalemate after 70 minutes of regulation play and two 15-minute overtime periods, and the visiting Cardinals prevailed in penalty strokes to notched their first NESCAC win of the season.

Wesleyan raises its record to 3-10 overall, 1-7 in NESCAC play, while Bates drops to 5-8, 1-7.

The Cardinals' Hailey Sarage, Liz Chabot and Morgan McCauley scored on Wesleyan's first three penalty stroke opportunities before missing their fourth, while Bates connected on 1 of 4, clinching the win for Wesleyan.

Chabot scored two goals during regulation for Wesleyan, with Lila Creighton and Alexa David adding one apiece. Allie Lynch had one assist.

Bates jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 23 minutes of the game on goals by senior forward Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.), senior forward Abby Childs (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior back Samantha Rothkopf (Chicago, Ill.). Wesleyan replaced starting goalkeeper Breen McDonald after Bates' third goal, and Danie Leahy held the Bobcats to one goal the rest of the way. Childs' second goal of the game, scored with 23:52 left in the second half, put Bates ahead 4-1.

Childs led the Bates attack with two goals and one assist, on Greenwood's game-opening score, while Greenwood and Rothkopf also scored goals. Sophomore Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I.), sophomore Annie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and senior Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) all notched assists.

Sophomore Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) had 14 saves in net for Bates. McDonald had three for Wesleyan, and Leahy added four more.

Bates finishes the regular season with a home game against Colby on Friday, Oct. 31, at 4:30 p.m., with a possible berth in the NESCAC Championship on the line. Wesleyan will host Connecticut College at 6 p.m. the same day. Bates gets into the NESCAC Championship with a win and a Connecticut College win over Wesleyan. If Bates and Wesleyan both win on Friday, Bates will finish the season tied with Colby and Wesleyan for seventh place in the NESCAC, and will have a two out of three chance via a coin flip to make the playoffs.
