WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The No. 23 nationally ranked Bates College men's tennis team put up a good fight at numerous spots in their match at No. 6 Williams College on Sunday, ultimately falling by a 8-1 score.
Bates sophomore Ben Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) was the lone winner for the Bobcats (5-7), who were eliminated from contention for a spot in the NESCAC Championships. Under the conference's new structure for the tournament, Bates was put into a group with Bowdoin, Williams, Middlebury, Connecticut College and Amherst and finished 2-3 in that group. The Bobcats will finish their season with a match at Colby on Wednesday, starting at 4 p.m.
Stein defeated the Ephs' Ted Haley handily at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, and now stands 10-2 in singles play this year. Also giving Williams all they had were Bates sophomore Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka), who lost 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, and first-year Zach Fenno (Armonk, N.Y.), who lost in three sets at No. 5 singles.
