WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University men's tennis team defeated No. 24-ranked Bates College on Sunday, 6-3, for the Judges' first win over the Bobcats since 1999.
Winning points for Bates (2-1), ranked sixth in New England, were sophomore Ben Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) at No. 3 singles, first-year Zach Fenno (Armonk, N.Y.) at No. 6 singles and the duo of Fenno and first-year Mike Reiss (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) at third doubles. The match was highlighted by a marathon battle at No. 5 singles, where Brandeis's Cliff Silverman defeated Bates sophomore Mike Sherman (Huntington, N.Y.) in a super tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3 (16-14).
Brandeis (3-5), ranked 14th in New England, opened the match with wins at the first two doubles positions. Seniors Sam Jonas (Toronto, Ont.) and Mike Vulfovich (Lexington, Mass.) took No. 1 doubles, 9-8, winning the tiebreaker, 7-4. Classmates Adam Sher (Columbia, Mo.) and Jordan Bieber (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) won an 8-6 decision at No. 2.
Bates will host the University of Southern Maine this Thursday at 5 p.m.
