MEDFORD, Mass. -- Tufts senior goalkeeper Marilyn Duffy-Cabana (Amesbury, Mass.) made a diving save of a Bates College penalty stroke to send the Jumbos home 2-1 winners on Homecoming Day in a key NESCAC field hockey match-up on Saturday. The win was the fourth in a row for the streaking Jumbos, who move to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in league play. Bates dropped to 3-2 and 1-2.
The victory was hard-fought as both teams scored in the first half. Tufts opened the scoring when Ileana Casellas-Katz (Denmark, Maine) blasted her second goal of the season past Bates senior Sarah Sprague (Cleveland, Ohio). The goal came just 10:12 into the game.
The lead was short-lived, however. Bates came right back less than four minutes later when Erin Chandler (Thornton, Pa.) gathered a Megan Petry (Crestwood, Ky.) pass and tapped it past Duffy-Cabana.
The teams went the next 86-plus minutes without a score, through the end of regulation and two 15-minute overtimes periods. Tufts amassed 27 penalty corners and 22 shots to Bates' 11, but could not put another one by Sprague, who made 10 saves on the day.
Tufts secured the win in the first series of penalty strokes, 3-1, as the first three Tufts shooters all scored. Meghan Becque (Westborough, Mass.), Stacey Watkins (St. Louis, Mo.) and Brittany Holiday (Wellesley, Mass.) each tallied. Duffy-Cabana, who had seven saves, stopped two of the first three Bobcat shooters to earn the win.
Bates' next game is at Husson College on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
