If, as is often the case for so many soccer teams, the Achilles' heel of the Bates women's team has been putting the ball into the other team's net, then the Bobcats started to do something about it last week, scoring four goals as Bates went 1-1, with a 3-2 midweek win at the University of New England followed by a 2-1 setback in double-overtime against Connecticut College.
Senior captain and midfielder Sam Rose (Toronto, Ontario) was responsible for half of those four goals, with one in each game. At UNE, Bates recorded the only goal of the opening half with just under seven minutes gone, when Rose took a pass from junior Julia Rafferty (Reading, Mass.) on the left wing and placed a low shot from the top of the box into the lower right corner.
Against Connecticut College, Rose again put the Bobcats in a 1-0 lead, which they held for most of the first half, with a rifle of a shot that was struck from a tough angle but found the side netting against the Camels. Taking a pass from sophomore forward Dakota Donovan (Marblehead, Mass.) from the corner toward the near post, Rose finished the play with a shot inside the far post, for her second goal in as many games.
Rose entered this week sharing Bates' team lead in goals scored (2) and owning the team’s points lead (5).
