Bates sophomore Avril Dunleavy had her second top-five finish in as many days on Saturday, placing fifth in the slalom at the Colby Carnival at Sugarloaf Mountain to lead the Bobcat women’s alpine ski team to another big day.
The Bates women were third best among 13 squads in the slalom, scoring 94 points to beat out such competition as New Hampshire (91) and Middlebury (78). Only Vermont and Dartmouth outscored the Bobcats, who had four women time in among the top 16 skiers.
Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished her first run in 45.29 seconds, followed by a 45.46-second second run, combining for a 1:30.75, just .05 behind fourth-place Sara Kikut of Dartmouth.
The day before, Dunleavy finished fourth out of 64 competitors in the women’s giant slalom. Dunleavy was eighth after her first run of 53.42 seconds, then rose to fourth, her career-best in the GS thus far, with the second-fastest second run in the field, 53.60 seconds.
Dunleavy is well on her way to a second NCAA Championship appearance: thus far she ranks eighth individually in the NCAA's East Region.
