Bates sophomore Jack Strain's goal in the third overtime period last Wednesday sealed the Bobcats' 13-12 victory over Colby, putting a most memorable stamp on Bates' fantastic home schedule.
The goal was Strain's sixth of the game, the most by a Bobcat since Nick Woods '10 also netted six against Southern Maine in 2007.
The win gave Bates the sixth seed in the eight-team NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Championship, the Bobcats' first postseason berth since 2007. They fell 14-10 in a hotly contested quarterfinal game at Tufts on Saturday, with Strain contributing a pair of assists.
Strain's big game served to vault him to the top of Bates' scoring list for the season, with 32 points, including 27 goals, the most by a Bobcat since Jack Sandler '02 scored 32 in 2002. Along with first-year midfielder Jack Allard (Ridgewood, N.J.) and senior midfielder Rob Highland (Yarmouth, Maine), who had 25 and 21 goals this season, respectively, Bates had its first trio of 20-goal scorers since 2002.
Strain is tied for 11th in the NESCAC in goals, and his 22 goals in NESCAC games tie him for fifth in the conference. His big sophomore campaign helped Bates finish with its most overall wins (7) and conference wins (5) since the 2006 season.
