Sophomore Alex Stekler tied for the team lead with a 10th-place finish to lead Bates College men’s golf to third place at the Maine Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Championship and to earn Bobcat of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 8-14.
A native of Avon, Conn., Stekler and classmate Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) each finished in a tie for 10th place to earn All-State accolades, the second such honors for Rutkin.
At Bangor Municipal Golf Course in Bangor, Maine, Stekler shot a 77 on Saturday and a 76 on Sunday at the par-71 course to conclude the event with a two-day score of 153. Rutkin tallied a 78 on day one and a 75 on day two.
As a team, the Bobcats recorded a score of 619, behind Husson (597) and Southern Maine (616). Bates finished ahead of UNE (623), Maine Maritime (629), Colby (645), UMaine-Presque Isle (646), Bowdoin (649), St. Joseph’s (656), UMaine-Farmington (663), and Easter Maine C.C. (697).
Next, the Bobcats play at Husson on Saturday.
