The Bates women's rowing team captured first place in the women's varsity eights race in an outstanding debut to the fall season at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta on Saturday in Worcester, Mass.
The Bates WV8 finished the approximately 2.5-mile course in a head race on Lake Quinsigamond in 15:05.850 -- more than 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Wellesley. Bates' second varsity eight (W2V8) placed sixth in 15:45.219, ahead of many other team's first varsity eights, including seventh-place Colby (15:52.825), WPI, Vermont, Simmons and Amherst.
Bates also fared very well in the varsity fours race, with its two boats placing second and third out of 24 in all. Bowdoin won the race in 16:49.735, followed by Bates' WV4 in 17:02.941 and Bates' W2V4 right behind in 17:05.781.
