Bates freshman Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) finished second overall, shooting a team-best 77, as the Bates College men's golf team won the team title by 13 strokes over runner-up Bowdoin at the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) Tournament on Sunday at Waterville Country Club.
With each team's top five scores figuring into the team count, the Bobcats had a score of 393 to easily win the title over Bowdoin (406) and Colby (411).
Marcus (Newton, Mass.) finished second overall with a 77 on the par-70 course, while sophomore teammate Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) carded a 78, third best overall. Senior captain Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) and sophomore Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) both shots 79s, and first-year Edmund Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) completed the team scoring with an 80, five strokes better than either opponent's fifth scorer.
It is Bates' first CBB title since 2008, although the tournament was not held in 2009 or 2010. The Bobcats placed third a year ago.
