After spending the fall semester at home, Bates sophomore Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) made a strong return to the Bates men's squash team's lineup in a pair of matches at Stanford University on Saturday.
Kicking off the new year with a pair of matches at Stanford University, the No. 14 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team went 1-1 on the day, as George Washington upended the Bobcats 5-4 before the host Cardinal fell 5-4 to the Bobcats. Hatata, meanwhile, swept both of his opponents while playing in the No. 1 position on the ladder for Bates.
Hatata swept GW's No. 1 player, Andres de Frutos, 11-1, 11-3, 11-1 at the No. 1 position, then fared just as well against Stanford opponent Will MacFarlane, winning 11-5, 11-5, 11-4.
Also going 2-0 individually on the day for Bates were senior captain Nabil Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.) at No. 4, junior captain Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) at No. 5, and senior Jason Shrubb (Hamilton, Bermuda) at No. 7.
Bates (4-3) will face Navy next Saturday at 11am at Mount Holyoke College, to be followed at 5pm that day with a match at nearby Amherst College.
