Senior captain Allen Sumrall easily qualified for next weekend's NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, leading Bates to eighth place among 55 teams at NCAA New England Regionals on Saturday at Harkness State Park.

In only his second cross country season, Sumrall (Albuquerque, N.M.) repeated as All-New England (top 35 individuals), covering the 8-kilometer course in 24:57.7, a 5:01.03 pace, less than a hundredth of a second ahead of Wesleyan senior Taylor Titcomb. Seventh-place Amherst senior Dan Crowley was only a second ahead of Sumrall. Sumrall moved up 26 places from last year's 34th-place showing.

Sumrall will receive an an individual invitation to run at NCAAs, taking place in Winneconne, Wis., next Saturday, Nov. 21.
