What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership means leading by example, while supporting and lifting up my teammates to help them reach their full potential.
What experience—big or small—has made a surprising impact on you? I volunteered at the Timothy Daniels House, a skilled rehabilitation and nursing home in my town. I ran events like bingo and trivia. This was a really valuable experience that taught me how to quickly adapt and make the games more accessible. Many of the residents had either vision, hearing, or memory issues, but they wanted to figure out a way to have many of the residents play games together and connect. I ended up finding large bingo cards to make it easier for them to see the cards for those who couldn't see very well, and for those who couldn't hear could see the cards from farther away. The trivia was also fun because the residents could win small prizes like getting extra time with the parakeets, or an extra dessert.
The trivia was a fun way for the residents to use their memory, especially because a lot of them had easier times remembering events from 50 years ago than 5 years ago. After each question many of them had stories to tell from when they were young. It was awesome to see how excited they were to remember and to have someone to tell the story to. I am so grateful to have gotten the chance to volunteer there, especially because it made it a lot easier to help out my 99 year old Nana.
What’s a failure or setback that taught you something valuable?
As a sophomore I made varsity for soccer, but I barely saw the field that entire season. It was defeating because growing up I was always on the "A" team and had lots of playing time. Between the end of my sophomore season and start of junior season I was outside in my backyard almost everyday working to improve my skill-set. I was a defender and my foot skills were not great so I practiced a lot of dribbling and passing against my house. This was a time I learned that I needed to work harder and I was not going to get anything handed to me. My junior season I began to see the field a lot more. I ended up playing holding midfielder, which wasn't my ideal position, but I learned to be flexible. This showed me first hand how important it is to work hard and be more flexible.
