Ron Chicoine, M.D.

Ron Chicoine, M.D. (Maine ’85, Vermont ’89) joins head coach Paul Gastonguay '89 for his eighth year as volunteer assistant coach for the Bates men’s and women’s tennis teams in 2020-21. “Doc” brings many years of playing and coaching experience to the Bates tennis program. He competed in college at the University of Maine and was a four-year letterman. He captained his senior year and achieved All New England status playing at the top of the Maine lineup his final three years. He was named interim head coach during his fifth year at Maine as a grad student. He has been ranked No. 1 in Maine in singles in numerous age group categories, mixed and men’s open doubles. Playing USTA team tennis Doc’s teams have won seven New England titles competing at seven national championships.

Doc coached the Lewiston High School boys tennis teams for nine years, leading the Blue Devils to nine consecutive Class A state finals, winning eight state championships and compiling a coaching career record of 137 wins and 2 losses. He subsequently took over coaching the men’s and women’s tennis teams at University of Southern Maine, leading them to the conference playoffs in seven of eight seasons with several of his players achieving All Conference status. He was named Little East Coach of the Year in 2010.

Doc resides in Lewiston and has three grown sons. He is a practicing anesthesiologist at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. He is past president of the Maine Society of Anesthesiologists and is active in the Twin City community when not assisting at the Wallach and Merrill tennis courts.
