Jacob Ellis is starting his fifth year with the Bates Cross Country and Track and Field programs in 2020-2021. As the Assistant Coach for Men's Distance and Cross Country, he works with the distance and middle distance runners through all three seasons.

A 2016 graduate of Bowdoin College, Ellis was a three time All-American for the Polar Bears in the 800 meter run. Over four years, he won 800m or 4x800m titles at the Maine State, NESCAC, Division III New England, All New England and ECAC Championships. He is the Bowdoin school record holder in the indoor and outdoor 800m, and also anchored each one of Bowdoin’s five fastest 4x800m relays, including four that set NESCAC and Division III New England championship meet records. In 2014, Ellis ran the fastest Division III 800m in the nation both indoor (1:51.06) and outdoor (1:49.66). Both of these times set Bowdoin school records and for the latter he was named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week. In 2016, he ran the fastest 1000m in Division III (2:25.46) which stands as the second-fastest time in NESCAC history.

During his tenure at Bates, the Bobcats have set school records in the 1000m and mile run as well as top-ten all-time performances in the 800m, 1000m, 1500m, mile, 3000m, 5000m, and 3000m steeplechase and produced NCAA All-American performances in the mile, 3000m, 5000m, and cross country.

Before joining the Bates coaching staff, Ellis coached at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine, where he instructed cross country, long sprints and middle distance, and the  horizontal jumps. He currently holds a USATF Level 1 certification, USTFCCCA Endurance Specialization, and USTFCCCA Strength and Conditioning certification, and has certificates in Injury Management and Program Management.
