Peter Wyman '86 accepts induction into the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society on May 30, 2015. (Daryn Slover)
A passionate and active alumnus, Peter Wyman earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. While at Bates, he served as a junior advisor, campus Eucharistic minister, and Ladd summer intern. He also interned throughout his junior and senior year at the Lewiston office of former Maine US Senator and Secretary of Defense, William S. Cohen. In the spring of 1986, Peter was selected as one of the top political science students in the country and represented Bates at a National Foreign Affairs conference held at the U.S. Naval Academy. There he participated in a think tank on how the United States would combat the growing threat of terrorism.
Peter was a two-sport varsity athlete at Bates, lettering with both the football and baseball teams. As four-year varsity football player and three-year defensive starter, he was selected as the 1985 co-recipient of the Alan C. Goddard Award for his achievements and leadership. Peter was a member of the 1984 baseball team that led Division III in team batting average and runs per game while advancing to the ECAC Championship finals.
Peter is a 2013 graduate of the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program. He has twice been a guest speaker at the HBS AMP program, addressing global executives on how to turn their HBS educational experience into a strategic global action plan.
Peter has been a dedicated contributor to Bates and consistent advocate for improving the competitive level of Bates Athletics’ recruiting efforts and for upgrading its facilities. He donated to both the Garcelon Field renovations and the new baseball indoor hitting facility at Leahey Field. Notably, Peter began professionally recruiting at Bates a year following graduation in 1987, as a staunch believer in Bates and the liberal arts education’s ability to matriculate and translate into highly effective business skills. Working with the Bates Career Development Center and the Friends of Bates Athletics, Peter routinely offers career counseling to Bates students and has been part of the GAME Day program, which advises students on how to transfer their athletic experiences into the business world. Additionally, Peter created a Ladd Internship at Ocean Spray several years ago.
Professionally, Peter is Ocean Spray's Vice President for Global Business Development and one of 13 officers at the 85-year-old Grower-Owners Cooperative in Middleboro-Lakeville, Massachusetts. He is responsible for developing Ocean Spray's global ingredient and international branded businesses. Peter is completing his 22nd year at Ocean Spray. Prior to joining Ocean Spray, Peter began his career at Procter & Gamble, where he spent seven years in the corporation’s food and beverage sector. Peter has been an active participant in Ocean Spray’s charity campaigns; he currently serves on the Special Olympics of Massachusetts Board and is a former board member for the United Way of Plymouth County. Peter is also an active advisor to the Ron Burton Training Village, a summer camp for unprivileged boys 10-18 years old.
Peter resides in his childhood hometown of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, with his wife of 27 years, Julie. They have three grown children: Brett, Jill and Matt.
In recognition of Peter's outstanding career as an athlete, and for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to academics and athletics, it is an honor to offer membership in the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society to Peter Wyman.
