Isabel Smith
Alexander Isabel is a psychology and Spanish double
major from Harvard, Mass. A four-year letter winner in cross
country, indoor and outdoor track, she is a five-time All-American
and a captain of the indoor and outdoor track teams. She holds nine
indoor and outdoor track and field school records. This past spring
she received the President’s Award from the Lewiston-Auburn
Sports Hall of Fame and in 2008 she was named First Team Academic
All-District by CoSIDA and ESPN The Magazine. In addition, she
is a member of the College Key and Phi Beta Kappa. She completed
two theses. The title of her psychology thesis is: “What Do
Civil Rights Mean to You? Conceptions of Civil Rights at the
Lewiston Middle School.” Her Spanish thesis title is:
“Las dos Caras del Diablo: Como Seis Documentales Representon
a la Mara Salvatrucha (The Two Faces of the Devil: How Six
Documentaries Portray the Mara Salvatrucha).” |

Mark Richard
Andrews Mark is a Spanish major from Cumberland
Foreside, Maine. A four-year member of the swim team, he was a
member of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that set the school
record. He is also a Dana Scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
His thesis title is: “Una Visita con las Musas: La Ciudad de
Malabo en la Literatura de Guinea Ecuatorial (A Visit with the
Muses: The City of Malabo in the Literature of Equatorial
Guinea).” |

Arnold Megan is a geology major from Jericho, Vt. A
three-year member of the Nordic ski team, she also played on the
women’s club ice hockey team. She is a member of Sigma Xi.
The title of her honors thesis is: “Sedimentation in
High-Artic Lake, Linnevatnet, Svalbard: A Modern Process Study
Using Sediment Traps.” |

Caryn Lynn
Benisch Caryn is a political science major from
Huntington, N.Y. A four-year letter winner in tennis and a team
captain, she was the 2008 George L. Wigton Award winner for her
work designing and directing a tennis workshop for underprivileged
children in Cairo, Egypt, a project dependent on her proficiency in
Arabic. The title of her thesis is: “Pawns in the Midst of
Political Conflict: An Inquiry into Life in the Occupied Golan
Heights.” |

Thomas Marshall
Bowden Thomas is a history major from Falmouth,
Maine. He is a four-year member of the golf team, and a member of
the 2009 NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team and a two-time member of the
NESCAC All-Academic Team. The title of his thesis is:
“Through the Eyes of Colonial Masters: A Gendered Analysis of
Bondwomen in Colonial Chesapeake and Low Country
Slavery.” |

Chapin Deacon is an English major from Cambridge, Mass. A
four-year letter winner in squash, he is a two-time member of the
NESCAC All-Academic team. The title of his thesis is:
“Something Dark to Shine In: Outsiders in Twentieth Century
Literature.” |

Leah Alexandra
Citrin Leah is a psychology major from Rye Brook,
N.Y. A four-year letter winner in softball, she is a member of the
2009 NESCAC Spring All-Sportsmanship Team and a two-time member of
the NESCAC All-Academic Team. In addition, she was voted Academic
All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in 2007,
2008, and 2009. The title of her honors thesis is:
“Determining the Function of Aggressive Behaviors: A Case
Study.” |

Samuel Tyler
Evans-Brown Sam is a Spanish and politics double
major from Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H. A four-year member of the
Nordic ski team, he was a 2009 NCAA Division I Championships
Qualifier and a member of the 2008 and 2009 NESCAC Winter
All-Academic Teams. He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. The
title of his thesis is: “Las Dos Mafaldas-La Critica Politica
en las Obras de Quino: Pre y Pos 1973 (The Two Mafaldas - Political
Criticism in the Works of Quino: Pre and Post 1973).” |

Hope Pearce Fleming Hope is a Spanish
major from Guilford, Conn. A four-year letter winner in swimming,
she was also a member of the club water polo team. She is a 2008
and 2009 member of the NESCAC Winter All-Academic Teams, as well as
a member of the 2008 women’s club water polo All-Academic
Team. Her thesis title is: “La Representacion de la Persona
Marginada en el Cuento Latinoamericano: La Artificialidad de las
Divisiones Binarias y la Culpabilidad del Sistema Partriacal en la
Construccion de Genero.”

Samuel Myles Geller Sam is an American
Cultural Studies major from Berkeley, Calif. A three-year letter
winner in lacrosse, he is a member of the 2008 and 2009 NESCAC
Spring All-Academic Teams. The title of his thesis is: “The
Evolution of a Poor Man’s College: Local Student Enrollment
at Bates College and its Effect on Town-Gown Relations since
1855.”

Goldstein Alexandra is an English major from Needham,
Mass. She is a four-year letter winner in cross country and a
three-year letter winner in indoor and outdoor track. She served as
a team captain for all three sports. The recipient of the 2009
Milton L. Lindholm Scholar Award, she is also a four-time member of
the NESCAC All-Academic Team, a Dana Scholar and a member of Phi
Beta Kappa. The title of her creative writing thesis is:
“Amelia and Other Stories.” |

Higgins Tara is a sociology major from
Jeffersonville, Vt. A four-year letter winner in indoor and outdoor
track and a team captain in both sports, she is a four-time member
of the NESCAC All-Academic Team and was also named to the 2008
NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Her thesis title is: “The
Effects of Smoking Cessation Treatment on Breastfeeding

Kellogg Nate is a rhetoric major from Natick, Mass.
He is a four-year letter winner in lacrosse and soccer and served
as a team captain for both sports. He is a four-time member of the
NESCAC All-Academic Teams and is the 2009 recipient of the Bates
Senior Sportsmanship Award. The title of his thesis is: “The
Reality of No Child Left Behind in Schools: A Cluster Analysis of
Teachers’ and Principals’ Experiences.” |

Jennifer Mary
Marino Jennifer is a chemistry majorfrom Methuen,
Mass. She is a four-year letter winner in soccer and indoor and
outdoor track and field, and a captain for indoor and outdoor
track. Jen is a member of the relay team that holds the school
record in the 4x400 meter relay and she holds the individual school
record for the indoor triple jump, the outdoor triple jump and the
outdoor long jump. She is a six-time member of the NESCAC
All-Academic Team and a two-time member of the US Track & Field
and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic All-American Team.
The title of her thesis is: “Raman Spectroscopy and Atomic
Force Microscopy.” |

Martone Matthew is a political science major from
Concord, N.H. A four-year letter winner in rowing, he is the 2009
recipient of the Milton L. Lindholm Scholar Award. In addition,
Matt is a hip hop enthusiast and a two-time intramural basketball
champion. The title of his thesis is: “Interest Group Access
and the Maine Clean Election Act: Black French Identity in the Age
of Obama.” |

Caitlinis a rhetoric major from Duxbury, Mass. A four-year letter
winner in rowing and a team captain, she is a member of the 2008
and 2009 NESCAC Spring All-Academic Teams and the 2008 NESCAC
Spring All-Sportsmanship Team. The title of her thesis is: "'Sassy'
Sarah: Analysis of Governor Sarah Palin's 2008 Republican National
Convention Address through the 'Feminine Style.'" |

Murray C.J. is a philosophy major from North Andover,
Mass. A four-year letter winner in cross country, indoor and
outdoor track, he is a team captain in all three sports and a
six-time member of the NESCAC All-Academic Team. In addition, he is
a member of the relay team that holds the school record for the
4x800 meter relay. The title of his thesis is: “Fregean
Phenomenal Content.” |

Pelz Duane is a mathematics major from Boulder, Colo.
He is a four-year letter winner in soccer, a team captain and a
two-time member of the NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team. Duane was
also named to the NESCAC Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team in
2006. |
Nicole Claire
Ritchie Nicole is an environmental studies major from
Putney, Vt. A four-year letter winner in both Nordic skiing and
rowing, she is a team captain in both sports and a member of the
2008 and 2009 NESCAC All-Academic Teams. She earned First Team
All-American honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association
in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and was also named as a CRCA National
Scholar-Athlete in 2008. The title of her thesis is:
“Chemistry at the Sediment Water Interface in Middle Range
Pond and Pleasant Lake, South-Central Maine, Late Summer
2008.” |

Russell Chip is an economics major from West
Hartford, Conn. A four-year letter winner in squash and a team
captain, he is a member of the 2008 and 2009 NESCAC Winter
All-Academic Teams and the 2009 NESCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship
Team. He was voted a Scholar Athlete by the College Squash
Association for the 2009 season. The title of his thesis is:

from South Pasadena, Calif. He is a four-year letter winner in
cross country and indoor track and a three-year letter winner in
outdoor track. He is also a six-time member of the NESCAC

of Spending for Various Consumption Categories from
1984-2004.”

title is: “Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in
Rubidium Vapor.” |

Walter Ricardo
Weisskopf Ricky is an economics major from San
Salvador, El Salvador. A four-year letter winner in squash, he is a
four-time All-American, a four-time men’s squash team MVP,
the recipient of the Bates Male Athlete of the Year award in 2005
and the recipient of the 2008 College Squash Association Skillman
Award, the highest honor in collegiate squash. In addition, he was
the recipient of the 2007 George Wigton Scholar Athlete Award and a
member of the 2007 and 2008 NESCAC Winter All-Academic Teams. The
title of his thesis is: “Returns to Human Capital Investment:
The Effect of the Choice of Field of Study in Labor market
Earnings.” Ricky is a December graduate who served as an
assistant squash coach for the 2009 season. |

Werblin Amy is a psychology major from Huntington
Beach, Calif. She is a three-year letter winner in soccer and a

is: “God for President: Religiosity, Policy Content and

Young Sarah is a psychology major from Charlemont,
Mass. A four-year letter winner in lacrosse and a team captain, she
is a member of the 2008 and 2009 NESCAC Spring All-Academic Teams.
She completed a service learning thesis where she designed and
administered a health intervention to at-risk girls in Lewiston.
The title of her thesis is: “A Health Intervention’s
Impact on Well-Being in At-Risk Girls.” |
