Before Bates: In 2018, Friedman founded THE BALL (Tennis Health Empowerment Building Attitudes Lifetime Lessons). THE BALL is a program designed to teach girls between the ages of seven and twelve about health, empowerment, mindfulness, and other skills using tennis. It has a dual purpose, both mental and physical catharsis. Friedman developed this program to give girls the opportunity to participate in activities they might not normally be exposed to. Her goal for the program is to reinforce ideas and skills about how to live a healthy and happy life, and to help strengthen their belief in themselves, the importance of being active, the idea that it is okay to be good at something, and the value of working hard.
During her second year running the program, Friedman created her own curriculum as well as managed her own publicity. The curriculum she created consisted of twelve weeks of detailed lesson plans and incorporated the importance of mindfulness and her use of sport (tennis) to teach girls empowerment. In June of 2020, Friedman was awarded the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award for the work she has been doing. As an award-winner, she is now working with the Billie Jean King Foundation as well as Beyond Sport, (an organization that helps promote groups that focus on the use of sport to impact communities around the world), so that she can learn how to be the best leader she can be. After a few months of working side by side with them, Friedman was selected to be a part of UNITE 2030, and their Youth Delegate Program. UNITE 2030 is an organization that works with change makers all across the world between the ages of 18 and 30.
As a UNITE 2030 Youth Delegate, Friedman works to “connect local grassroots campaigns, amplify youth actions that are creating change, develop tools and programs to support young people everywhere to achieve the Global Goals and accelerate solutions to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)” (UNITE 2030). This is done through participating in roundtable discussions, taking part in leadership workshops, hosting and being featured in panels and Global Youth Summits, participating in podcasts, doing interviews, and completing a leadership curriculum. Through this program, Friedman receives mentorship, experience, support, multitudes of resources, and gains countless connections.
Personal: 2020 graduate of Ross School (N.Y.).
