MEDFORD, Mass. -- Kylie Rosenquest scored in the 63rd minute on an assist from Reagan Malo as the No. 11 nationally ranked Bates field hockey team fell in overtime Sunday by a score of 2-1 to No. 3 Tufts in the NCAA quarterfinals.
The Bobcats (14-7) gave the Jumbos (18-2) all they could handle for the third time this year, but Tufts emerged victorious once again, advancing to the Final Four for the first time since 2019.
Bates wraps up the winningest season in program history, as their 14 victories exceeded the previous record of 13, first set in 1975 and matched by the 2023 team. This marked the Bobcats' first appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.
The Jumbos jumped on top in the second quarter, taking advantage of a penalty corner in the 21st minute to score the first goal of the game. Kayleigh McDonald delivered the insert and Lainie Pearson was able to get it back to McDonald for her third goal of the season.
Down 1-0, the Bobcats answered in the fourth quarter. They too scored off a penalty corner, with the inserting player getting the goal. Junior
Brooke Moloney-Kolenberg (Winchester, Mass.) delivered the insert in the 53rd minute and Bates worked the ball around to senior
Anna Cote (New Gloucester, Maine), who took a shot that Moloney-Kolenberg tipped in by the left post, knotting the score at one apiece. It marked Moloney-Kolenberg's ninth goal of the season and Cote's team-leading sixth assist of the season.
Cote finishes the year as the team leader in both goals (13) and assists. She's the first Bobcat to pull off that feat since
Taylor Lough '19 in 2017.
With the game tied after Moloney-Kolenberg's goal, the Jumbos quickly pushed the ball down the field, earning a penalty corner. Bates stood tall on defense and blocked the shot attempt. A late green card in the 57th minute left the Bobcats a player down for two minutes, but they were able to keep the game even at one, sending the game to overtime.
Less than three minutes into the extra session, Malo delivered a perfect cross from the far side that found an open Rosenquest on the right side of the cage. She tipped the ball home, bringing Bates' historic season to an abrupt end.
"It was a great game, with two really incredible teams," head coach
Dani Kogut said. "I am so proud to be a Bobcat."
