No. 10 field hockey breezes past Nor'easters, 4-1

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Four different Bobcats found the back of the cage and the No. 10 nationally ranked Bates field hockey team breezed past the University of New England Nor'easters with a 4-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at Blue Bolt Field.

Bates (5-3) tallied 26 shots, 12 on goal. Meanwhile, the Bobcats held UNE (3-8) to three shots, two on goal. Bates finished the game with a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior Maria Femia (Canton, Mass.), senior captain Sarah Bussell (Thompson's Station, Tenn.), junior Anna Cote (Auburn, Maine), and senior captain Molly Griffin (Holden, Mass.) each scored one goal apiece for Bates.

Femia collected a rebound in the middle and netted her team-leading sixth goal of the year to open things for the visitors after just 46 seconds of action. Bates added two early in the 2nd quarter off the sticks of Bussell (18th minute) and Cote (20th). Senior captain Paige Cote (Auburn, Maine) assisted the Bussell tally for Bates, as the Bobcats accounted for all 16 shot attempts and eight penalty corners during the first half.

The margin became four in the 41st minute on a goal by Griffin, and Bates starting goalie sophomore Kaili Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) exited the contest at the conclusion of the 3rd period with one save.

UNE spoiled the shutout bid in the 48th minute on a corner play. Lily Clough and Francesca Caccamo worked a give-and-go to get around a defender and setup Clough in the heart of the circle for a shot towards the left post that was tipped over the keeper's pad by Madi Robito.

Dawn DeWeese-Moss finished with six saves for the Nor'easters, who received one defensive save apiece from Micaela Jacobs and Lauren Green.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday when they host No. 20 Hamilton at 11am on Campus Ave. Field.
