No. 10 field hockey makes most of Senior Day, defeats Conn. College 4-1

LEWISTON, Maine -- A pair of seniors tallied goals and the No. 10 nationally ranked Bates field hockey team rolled to a 4-1 win over Connecticut College Saturday on Senior Day at Campus Ave. Field.

The Bobcats (9-4, 5-3 NESCAC) struck right away, scoring in the second minute of action to take the lead for good. As they have all year, the hosts took advantage of a penalty corner. Senior captain Molly Griffin (Holden, Mass.) delivered the insert to the top of the circle. Fellow senior Lauren Salazar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) ripped a shot to the right post where senior Kami Lambert (Augusta, Maine) was waiting. Lambert deflected the ball into the cage for her seventh goal of the season. It marked Salazar's second assist of the year.

Bates held Connecticut College (5-9, 1-8 NESCAC) without a shot for the first 15 minutes of action. The Bobcats took complete control on the scoreboard in the second quarter, scoring twice.

In the 22nd minute, junior Anna Cote (Auburn, Maine) got the ball to her sister senior captain Paige Cote (Auburn, Maine) on the left side of the shooting circle. Camel goalkeeper Liz Winemaster denied the initial shot attempt but Paige Cote collected the rebound and tallied her seventh goal of the season.

Anna Cote added to the scoring in the 28th minute. Off a restart, Cote intercepted a pass and drove into the circle. While on the run, Cote ripped a line drive back-handed shot into the lower right corner of the cage for a 3-0 Bates lead.

Up 3-0 at the half, the Bobcats did not score in the third quarter but they held the Camels off the board as well, despite five penalty corners in the quarter for the visitors.

Another great individual effort from Anna Cote led to the Bobcats' fourth goal of the contest. In the 51st minute, she drove the ball through multiple defenders into the center of the circle and Cote's shot went through the legs of the Camel keeper for a 4-0 Bates lead and her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

With time winding down, the Camels avoided the shutout thanks to a goal from Bridget McGann. Kendall Arnold delivered a feed in front of the cage and McGann was eventually able to gather the pass despite a charging Bates keeper. After a few steps to her left, McGann turned and lofted a shot top shelf into the right corner of the cage, making the score 4-1 in favor of Bates with just 11 seconds remaining in regulation.

Senior Emma Volkers (Bethesda, Md.) got the start for Bates in the cage and picked up the win, playing the first 15 minutes of the contest. Sophomore Kaili Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) played the rest of the contest and made three saves for Bates. Liz Winemaster played the first 30 minutes for the Camels and made four saves. Sophie Moniz played the final 30 minutes and made one save.

The Bobcats tallied 20 shots (nine on goal) and held the Camels to 10, with four on goal. Bates recorded eight penalty corners to Conn. College's seven.

Before the game, the Bobcats honored their eight seniors: Ella Blum (South Salem, N.Y.), Griffin, Paige Cote, Molly Harmon (Farmington, Maine), Sarah Bussell (Thompson's Station, Tenn.), Lambert, Salazar, and Volkers.

Bates is back in action Sunday when the Bobcats host No. 9 nationally ranked Williams at 12pm.
