WATERVILLE, Maine -- The No. 22 nationally ranked Bates men's swimming and diving team continued to rewrite the program record books Saturday at the NESCAC Championships. Bates swimmers broke five school records and leaped over Bowdoin into fourth place out of 11 teams with one day remaining.
The Bobcats enter the final day of NESCACs with 724 points, just 19 points behind third-place Amherst. Bowdoin is right behind Bates in fifth with 712.5 points.
Saturday's finals began with the 200 yard medley relay team of junior
Nathan Berry (Augusta, Maine), junior
Nate Sommer (Terre Haute, Ind.), senior
Andrew Hall (Little Silver, N.J.), and junior
John Marcolina (Mystic, Conn.) breaking the program record with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:29.38, good for third in the conference.
Sophomore
Mark Gregory (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) also finished third in the conference, swimming to the finish in the 1,000 yard freestyle in 9:20.54, a new school record.
Hall followed up his relay performance with a NESCAC runner-up showing in the 400 IM. He broke his own school record in the event with an NCAA "B" cut time of 3:58.
Sommer and Berry shined in their individual events as well, with Sommer breaking the Bates record in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA "B" cut time of 55.58, good for fifth in the conference.
Berry followed up his NESCAC title in the 50 yard backstroke on Friday with a runner-up showing in the 100 yard backstroke on Saturday. His time of 48.40 is an NCAA "B" cut and breaks his own school record in the event.
The Bobcats get the final day of the NESCAC Championships started with the prelims Sunday at 10am. Finals are set for 5:30pm.
