Cote, Gianunzio score four goals apiece as field hockey beats Thomas

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Paige Cote and senior Emily Gianunzio both scored a career-high four goals and added assists as the Bates College field hockey team defeated Thomas College 10-0 Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Campus Avenue Field.

Sophomore Kami Lambert (Augusta, Maine) added a goal and three assists for the Bobcats (4-3), who scored their most goals in a game since an 11-0 defeat of UMaine-Farmington in 2018.

Bates held Thomas (3-6) without a shot while attempting 34 shots of its own, putting 17 on goal. The visiting Terriers entered the scoring circle numerous times during the game but were held without a shot by a staunch Bates defense, including on Thomas's lone penalty corner of the night.

Alexis Bowman started in goal for Thomas and made three saves while allowing eight goals through one half. Elise Syphers made one save before leaving in the third quarter with an injury. Brennan Pinto played the final 25 minutes in goal for Thomas, allowing two goals and making three saves.

Bates goalies Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.) and Emma Volkers (Bethesda, Md.) did not require any saves on their combined shutout.

Cote (Auburn, Maine) scored all four of her goals within the first 21 minutes of the game,

Bates first scored in the fourth minute of the game, when Lambert intercepted an attempted clearing pass by Thomas just outside the circle. Gianunzio (Darien, Conn.) cut toward the goal and Lambert fed her in stride for Gianunzio, who juked a defenseless Bowman before rolling the ball into the net.

A minute later it was 2-0, as Cote scored from the top of the circle on a penalty corner feed from senior Ashton Bayle (Wayne, Pa.)

Cote scored the game's most impressive goal with five minutes to go in the quarter, carrying into the top of the circle and striking a backhanded shot high and inside the upper left corner of the Thomas cage.

Bates took a 4-0 lead before the end of the first quarter when senior Riley Burns' (Sterling, Mass.) shot was kicked away by Bowman, but Cote knocked in the rebound from 15 feet out.

Lambert netted her first goal of the season to open the scoring in the second quarter, as a long cross from Paige Cote was deflected by a Thomas defender, but Lambert hustled in to shoot the loose ball.

Gianunzio scored again to make it 6-0 early in the second quarter, taking a short tap in close from Cote and sliding the ball inside the far right post.

With 8:57 to go in the half, Lambert controlled the ball near the left goal post and shoveled the ball across the face of the goal to Cote for her fourth goal of the game and a 7-0 Bates lead.

The Bobcats added their eighth goal before the half was done, as sophomore Molly Griffin (Holden, Mass.) outfought a defender for possession in the left flat and crossed to senior Grace Hoehl (South Burlington, Vt.), who finished for her fifth goal of the season.

After a scoreless third quarter, Gianunzio added two final scores in the fourth. First a shot by Griffin was turned away by Pinto, but Lambert collected the rebound along the goal line and centered to Gianunzio for an easy finish. Less than a minute later, Gianunzio took an entry pass from first-year Anna Lindeis (New Canaan, Conn.) with her back to the goal, and skillfully swept the ball around for a backhanded score and the final 10-0 difference.

The Bobcats have a big weekend coming up with two road conference games, at No. 3 Tufts on Saturday at noon, and at No. 8 Trinity on Sunday at noon. Thomas next will host UMaine-Farmington Saturday at 2:30pm.
