HARTFORD, Conn. --
Kami Lambert gave the Bates field hockey team an early 1-0 lead at a top-10 nationally ranked opponent for the second game in a row, but No. 8 Trinity College got a pair of goals from Caelin Flaherty in the second half to win 3-1 in an evenly contested NESCAC game on Sunday.
Flaherty, the leading scorer in the NESCAC, also assisted on the Bantams' game-tying goal in the first quarter, before scoring her 13th and 14th goals in the 38th and 58th minutes of the game.
Lambert (Augusta, Maine) put Bates (4-5, 1-4 NESCAC) in a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal midway through the first quarter. Lambert scored in all three games this week for the Bobcats, and is third on the team with 11 points (3 goals, 5 assists).
India Shay scored her fifth goal on Flaherty's assist in the 13th minute to tie the game, however. Flaherty added an unassisted tally midway through the third quarter, carrying the ball up the field on a counterattack then pirouetting around a Bates challenger in the circle before scoring with a back-handed shot. She gave Trinity an insurance goal with 1:31 remaining in regulation, with an assist by Katrina Winfield.
Trinity held only a 6-5 advantage in shots in the game, including a 5-4 difference in shots on goal. Bates had a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Junior captain
Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.) made two saves for Bates, while Emma Cropper made three stops in goal for Trinity, one against sophomore
Molly Harmon (Farmington, Maine) and two against senior captain
Riley Burns (Sterling, Mass.).
The schedule remains tough for Bates, with its next game at top-ranked Middlebury set for Saturday at noon.
