Field hockey controls play, but falls 1-0 at No. 8 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Bates field hockey team outshot No. 8 nationally ranked Amherst in a 1-0 loss to the Mammoths on Sunday.

Capitalizing on the Mammoths' first penalty corner of the contest, Muffie Mazambani netted her eighth goal of the fall to give Amherst (9-2, 5-2 NESCAC) a 1-0 lead. Dishing the insertion pass to Beth Williamson at the top of the arc, Mazambani sprinted to the front of the net and tipped Williamson's blast into the cage.

Bates (4-7, 1-6 NESCAC) looked to switch up momentum and even the score in the 24th and 25th minute, earning four penalty corner opportunities in the two-minute span, but Amherst's Sara Nidus was unfazed in goal, turning away two low rips by the Bobcats to keep Bates off the board.

Aiming to double their advantage midway through the third frame, Mazambani and Sam Maynard combined to put three quick shots on target but Bates junior captain goalkeeper Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.) thwarted the attempts.

First-year Anna Lindeis (New Canaan, Conn.) had a solid chance for the Bobcats with 6:00 on the clock in the third, powering a shot through traffic from the right side, but Kate Smith recorded her third defensive save of the season on the attempt.

The Bobcats tallied 18 shots on the day, including eight on goal. Amherst finished with 11 shots, five on goal. First-year Anna Cote (Auburn, Maine) led Bates with five shots, two on goal. Biddle finished with four saves for Bates, while Nidus finished with seven saves for Amherst.

Bates is back in action this Saturday at noon when the Bobcats host Wesleyan at Campus Ave. Field.
