Junior Eric Wainman won the decathlon with the second-most points in school history for men’s track at the ECAC Championships to earn Bobcat of the Week honors for the week of May 12-18.

A native of Glastonbury, Conn., Wainman took the event with 6,635 points, tallying 10 team points for the Bobcats at the meet and moving into second place on Bates’ all-time list. He now trails only Joe Northrup who posted 6,721 points in 2005 and ranks one spot ahead of Jesse Chapman who registered 6,586 points in 2010.

The Westminster School product won both the high jump (1.92 meters, 731 points) and the 1,500-meter run (4:29.46, 748 points) on his way to the victory while tying for first in the pole vault (4.04 meters, 628 points) and finishing second in the discus (34.97 meters, 563 points).

His placements in the six other events included: a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.65 seconds, 773 points), a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (51.96 seconds, 726 points), fifth-place finishes in the long jump (6.55 meters, 709 points) and the shot put (11.26 meters, 562 points), a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.47 seconds, 759 points), and an eight-place finish in the javelin (39.57 meters, 436 points).

Wainman and three other members of the men’s track team will compete at the NCAA Championships from Thursday to Saturday in Delaware, Ohio.
