Junior defender Hannah Beinecke scored her first two career goals, both in the second half, as the Bates field hockey team pulled away from a scoreless draw at halftime to defeat the University of Southern Maine 3-0 in a non-conference game last Thursday night at Campus Avenue Field.
Beinecke (Manchester, Mass.), one of three team captains, netted her first collegiate goal with 21:23 remaining in regulation time. Out of a penalty corner inserted by sophomore Sydney Cowles (Wayne, Pa.), sophomore Claire Markonic's (Millerton, N.Y.) shot from the edge of the circle was deflected away by USM goalie Amanda Kasbohm. Amidst a morass of players from both sides in front of the goal, Beinecke was responsible for knocking the ball into the cage.
Twelve minutes later, with 9:24 remaining, Bates and Beinecke struck on another penalty corner. A pass was delivered to senior Jill Conway (Andover, Mass.) at the top of the circle, and she passed to first-year Delaney Nalen (Englewood, Colo.) on the left side. Nalen's rocket was tipped from near the left goalpost into the goal by the captain for a 2-0 Bates lead.
