BANGOR, Maine -- Sophomore Sydney Phillips had 13 kills in a 3-0 win over Saint Joseph's, then tied for the team high with seven kills in a 3-0 win over Husson, as the Bates volleyball team opened the 2019 season with a pair of shutout wins at the Husson Invitational Friday night.
Bates (2-0) stays in Bangor on Saturday to face Plattsburgh at 10am and Curry at 2pm.
The Bobcats had no difficulty defeating the Monks (0-4) in their first match, committing just two attack errors against 31 kills while winning sets by 25-9, 25-15, 25-12 scores. Phillips (Plainville, Mass.) sent 13 kills to the floor while committing only one attack error on 22 attempts (.545), and added three solo blocks, four aces and five digs. Junior Angel Echipue (Munich, Germany) added six kills with no errors (.462) to go with four blocks (3 solo).
Junior Ruby Lightbourn (Los Angeles, Calif.) contributed four kills and eight digs. Senior Taylor Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif.) led the team with 11 digs in two sets of action, while senior Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 10 digs and a team-high eight assists. First-year Emma Eide (Ramsey, N.J.) made a strong debut with seven digs, three assists and five aces.
In the Bobcats' late-night victory over the host Eagles (1-5), Phillips and Lightbourn shared the team lead with seven kills apiece as Bates by set scores of 25-14, 25-17, 25-14. Lightbourn hit at a .545 percentage and added nine digs and three aces.
Junior Olivia McCulloch (Sunderland, Mass.) totaled five kills and a team-high 10 digs, and Echipue added five kills and two solo blocks. Panepinto and Eide split setting duties, posting 13 and 10 assists, respectively.
