Polgar wins twice, No. 17 women's squash splits a pair of matches against NESCAC foes

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior captain Luca Polgar won a pair of matches and the No. 17 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team fell 8-1 to No. 13 Williams before bouncing back to defeat No. 23 Connecticut College 9-0 Saturday at the Bates College Squash Center.

The Bobcats (5-2) return to action Tuesday when they host the Tufts University Jumbos at 5pm.

No. 13 Williams 8, No. 17 Bates 1

The Ephs (5-3) swept five matches on their way to an 8-1 win over the Bobcats Saturday morning. 

Polgar (Budapest, Hungary), a three-time first team All-NESCAC selection, defeated the Ephs' Julia Ward by a count of 3-1 (11-5, 11-13, 11-4, 12-10) at the No. 1 position.

Elsewhere, first-year Victoria Haghighi ( Bronx, N.Y.) put a scare into Abigail LeBlanc before falling 3-2 (11-6, 7-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8) at the No. 6 position. 

At the No. 3 position, junior Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) won the third game of her match before falling 3-1 (11-2, 11-1, 9-11, 11-2) to Haley Jefferson. Sophomore Natalie Bachman (New Canaan, Conn.) split her first two games at No. 8 in a 3-1 (13-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-3) loss to Kathryn Wright.

The Bobcats swept eight matches in a 9-0 win over No. 23 Connecticut College Saturday afternoon.

Polgar improved her personal record to 6-1 on the season with a 3-0 (11-5, 11-1, 11-0) win over Margaret Davey at the No. 1 position.

Up and down the lineup, Bates dominated the Camels (6-5), with strong performances. First-years Erika Parker (San Salvador, El Salvador), Haghighi, Cordelia Dotson (Houston, Texas) and Lucy Moseley (Philadelphia, Pa.) all swept their opponents at the No. 2, No. 6, No. 7 and No. 9 positions respectively.

Sophomores Natasha Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) and Bachman won with ease at the No. 5 and 8 positions and juniors O'Brien and Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took care of business at the No. 3 and 4 positions. O'Brien bounced back from dropping her first game to win 3-1 (8-11, 11-7, 14-12, 11-2) over the Camels' Davis Lemay.
