No. 17 women's squash cruises to 9-0 win over No. 22 Mount Holyoke

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 17 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team started the weekend with a strong performance in a 9-0 win over No. 22 Mount Holyoke Friday night at the Bates College Squash Center. 

Bates (4-1) swept eight matches on its way to victory over the Lyons (1-5). 

Junior Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) made her 2019-20 debut in impressive fashion, defeating Giselle Cabrera 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-1) at the No. 3 position. First-year Erika Parker (San Salvador, El Salvador) moved up to the No. 2 position and won her fourth match of the young season with a 3-0 (11-2, 11-0, 11-1) victory over Emma Robson. Fellow first-year Cordelia Dotson (Houston, Texas) did the same at the No. 7 position by a count of 3-0 (11-2, 11-1, 11-0) over Nicole Lara Granados.

Bates' depth was evident, with sophomore Natalie Bachman (New Canaan, Conn.) and first-year Lucy Moseley (Philadelphia, Pa.) earning 3-0 wins at the No. 8 and 9 positions respectively.

After falling in three games to Mount Holyoke's Mihiliya Methsarani last season, senior captain Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) rallied from down two games to one on Friday and defeated Methsarani 3-2 (11-5, 8-11, 1-11, 11-2, 11-8) at the No. 1 position.

In the middle of the lineup, junior Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) swept Jennifer Mbah 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-1) at the No. 4 position. Sophomore Natasha Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) earned her second win of the year with a 3-0 (11-3, 11-1, 11-2) victory over Genesis Lara Granado at the No. 5 position. And first-year Victoria Haghighi (Bronx, N.Y.) moved to 3-2 in her rookie year with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-1) win over Meli Marquez at the No. 6 position.

Bates is back at home Saturday when the Bobcats host Williams at 11am and Connecticut College 4pm.
