MADISON, N.J. -- Sophomore Meghan Graff poured in 19 points and first-year Brianna Gadaleta added 10 off the bench but the Bates women's basketball team fell 60-56 Saturday afternoon to Plattsburgh State in the consolation game of the Rose City Tipoff Classic.

Graff (South Portland, Maine) earned a spot on the All-Tournament team, averaging 19.5 points over the course of two games.

The Bobcats (0-2) and the Cardinals (1-1) proved to be very evenly matched foes. Saturday's contest was tied at halftime and tied again at the end of three quarters.

Bates took its largest lead of the game with 5:23 left in the second quarter when junior captain Julia Middlebrook (Ridgefield, Conn.) capped off a personal 6-0 run with a jumper, putting the Bobcats up 24-19.

The Bobcats led 25-21 until Mya Smith recorded a steal and a layup to trim the lead to two with 1:31 left in the half. Another Smith layup tied the game at 25 going into halftime.

Bates broke the 8-0 run on a three-pointer from Gadaleta (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and senior captain Melanie Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) cut the Cardinal lead to three with 4:28 left in the quarter.

The teams traded buckets until Graff completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:26 left, tying the game at 35.

Plattsburgh State went back up by five before the Bobcats completed the quarter on a 5-0 run, capped off by a Graff jumper at the buzzer.

With the game tied at 40 to begin the fourth quarter, the Cardinals went on a 5-0 run of their own, taking a 45-40 lead on a Durnin layup with 8:18 left.

Bates cut the Cardinal lead to one multiple times but was unable to tie the game again. A pair of Graff free throws with 1:13 remaining trimmed the Cardinal advantage to three at 54-51. The Cardinals hit their free throws down the stretch to hold on to the win.

Durnin hit 7-14 shots and scored 19 points to pace the Cardinals. Taylor Clare added a game-high 11 rebounds.
